DEVEDO’s First Photography Exhibition—間まMA:Ryuichi by Rensis
Japanese renowned musician Ryuichi Sakamoto visited Hong Kong in 1998, and photographer Rensis Ho captured his unique portraits.
As for Rensis, Sakamoto is a brilliant and charismatic artist. During the shooting process, Sakamoto quickly entered his own realm, sometimes looking directly into the camera, sometimes lying on the ground. His “performance” felt impromptu, effortlessly charming, and Rensis skillfully captured his spiritual gesture.
Twenty-seven years later, these precious images will be fully exhibited at DEVEDO for the first time. The exhibition, themed “間まMA,” aims to reflect the professor’s unique charisma and the profound meaning conveyed by his photographs.
In Japanese, “間まMA” is composed of the characters for “door” and “sun,” symbolizing sunlight filtering through a door into a room. Much like Sakamoto’s music, it brings warmth and inner peace amidst the world’s hustle and bustle.
MA” also represents negative space or emptiness. In traditional Japanese art, this concept profoundly influences composition and aesthetics. In modern interpretation, it is an artistic expression of blank space, inviting viewers to focus on the negative space and find beauty in simplicity.
Rensis’s works from the 1990s feature minimalist backgrounds that highlight the professor’s demeanor and expression. The photographs, printed on Japanese awagami washi paper, resonate with Ryuichi Sakamoto’s calm and Zen spirit.

Hong Kong photographer Laurence Lai will be participating in the Affordable Art Fair UK in London for the first time, showcasing old Hong Kong images of airplanes flying low near Kai Tak Airport, as well as streets full of signboards and neon lights, which bring a nostalgic Hong Kong to the London fair.
Collotype printing may seem unrelated to Macao’s history, but it reveals a connection across time and space. In 1874, Scottish photographer John Thompson compiled images he had taken in Macao, Hong Kong, and China into a book titled “Illustrations of China and its people,” published as collotypes made from Thompson’s photographs.
Invented by French chemist and photographer Alphonse Poitevin 170 years ago, the Collotype printing process was introduced to Japan from Europe in 1883. Benrido established its Collotype Atelier in Kyoto in 1905 and began producing art catalogs and postcards on a full-scale basis. This year, Benrido commemorates the 120th anniversary of its Collotype Atelier, a beacon of artistic reproduction and cultural preservation.
Collotype is a complex printing process that uses photographs as its original source, achieving detailed and exceptional reproductions with a smooth and rich texture. Its use of pigment-based printing ensures high durability and archival stability, making it widely used in reproducing artworks of artistic and historical value.
In the 21st century, Benrido has not only dedicated itself to reproducing cultural treasures but, over the past two decades, has also expanded its international market, creating stunning Mini Portfolios for celebrated photographers and artists, including Fan Ho, Shoji Ueda, Rinko Kawauchi, and Saul Leiter.
Photography is more than just the click of a button. Excellent works deserve to be presented as a print. This exhibition, “The Art of Collotype: Prints Made by Benrido,” focuses on collotype prints produced in Kyoto, showcasing works by over 20 Japanese and international photographers.
In a compelling addition, the exhibition presents an exceptional collection from the Provoke Generation—a vital movement in Japanese photography. Featuring iconic figures such as Daido Moriyama, Takuma Nakahira, Kazuo Kitai, Yutaka Takanashi, Miyako Ishiuchi, and Hitomi Watanabe, this segment delves into the diverse styles and perspectives that defined their work, inviting viewers to explore the dynamic interplay of culture, emotion, and narrative.
This exhibition goes beyond mere visuals. We invite you to appreciate the artistry and labor that underpin each print, all while surrounded by the evocative scent of ink and paper.

Isabelle Boccon-Gibod(法國,1968年)
Raymond Cauchetier

Avocado Art Lab invited PhotogStory to curate an exhibition titled BOUNDARY-less for its debut at Art Central, which highlights the profound artistry of Taiwanese contemporary photography.
Avocado Art Lab, a leading contemporary art gallery and innovative print lab from Taipei, has been selected to participate in the 10th edition of Art Central, one of Hong Kong’s premier art fairs.
For its debut at Art Central, Avocado has invited PhotogStory to curate a remarkable exhibition titled BOUNDARY-less, featuring four internationally acclaimed Taiwanese artists—Shen Chao-Liang, Chou Ching-Hui, Chung Mong-Hong, and Lo Sheng-Wen. This extraordinary collection highlights the profound artistry of Taiwanese contemporary photography and video art.
Artistic creation involves continually pushing boundaries, and these four artists have successfully transcended the limits of traditional creation with their distinctive works.
Shen Chao-Liang is a prominent contemporary photographer known for his commitment to documenting the evolution of Taiwanese society. His iconic series Stage has meticulously captured Taiwan’s dazzling “transformer-style” traveling stage trucks. The elaborate stages on wheels are large, colorful, and brightly lit structures that travel almost continuously across the country. They unfold within minutes to reveal their enchanting settings, then quickly pack up and depart shortly after a performance concludes. The Stage has become Shen’s unique visual language.
Chou Ching-Hui, Animal Farm
Chou Ching-Hui, also recognized as a leading contemporary photographer in Taiwan, brings a unique perspective to his work. His transition from a photojournalist to a creator has resulted in a distinctive photographic language. His Animal Farm project, a departure from his previous documentary style, is a testament to his innovative approach. Through his delicately exquisite and vibrantly colored images, he creates a hyper-real atmosphere, offering a fresh and intriguing take on the development of modern society.
Chung Mong-Hong, who won the Golden Horse Award for Best Director and Best Feature for his 2019 film “A Sun,” has never confined himself to a single role. He is not only a director, screenwriter, and producer but also an outstanding cinematographer, having won the Golden Horse Best Cinematography Award for “The Great Buddha+.” As a photographer, he captures fragments of daily life, focusing on seemingly insignificant moments. His works are calm, poetic, and subtly impactful.
Chung Mong-Hong
Lo Sheng-Wen also explores his interests without boundaries. With a deep fascination for ecological environments and animal behavior, he examines the relationship between humans, animals, and the environment through various media, including photography, video, installation, and games. His famous work “White Bear” addresses the phenomenon of polar bear captivity. In contrast, another significant work, “Fallout,” uses satellite image collages to depict the traces of nuclear testing worldwide, examining the complex connections between image and reality, human behavior, and the environment through these man-made landscapes.
This exhibition aims to bridge cultures and share Taiwan’s rich artistic landscape with a global audience. We hope to foster meaningful connections with international art institutions and collectors, uniting the world through the universal language of art.
