Today is Mother’s Day. It reminds me of the “Mother” taken by Russian art Alexander Rodchenko in 1924. He started to create with photography at the age of 33, and his subjects were friends (such as the poet Vladimir Mayakovsky) and his 59-year-old mother, Olga Evdokimova. Olga was originally an illiterate. However, she learned to read in her 50s. So when Rodchenko saw his mother was reading with glasses, he instantly captured the moment.
Rodchenko cropped the acclaimed version of “Mother ” from the original work. As a result, the picture focuses on Olga’s facial expressions and gestures, and her black turban is more prominent. Her wrinkled hand holds the glasses very eye-catching, and it makes people wonder what she is reading.
